HAIR GOALS ~ Healthy Hair without Harm

 

 

 

🌞 It's Summer, and it can be the harshest season on our hair. 

Stress, summer heat, sunshine, heated styling tools, synthetics, sweat on the scalp... no matter the texture, thickness, or color, all of these can take its toll on our tresses. If our hair could talk, it might say a few choice words and then just ask us to take it easy.

When we pull, stretch, over wash, under wash, color, or strip it, it can weaken the hair shaft causing hair to break or become rough and dull.  Our hair might say that it's had better days and it's drowning in synthetic fragrances and is being suffocated in plastics.

Frizz, flyaways, dry hair, lackluster hair, and just plain ol' fussy hair ~ whatever your fancy is with your hair, or even if your hair is left to fend for itself, it's a dead follicle that loves to be fed with vitamins, proteins, and keratin-building elements. 

In previous blogs, we've talked about the importance of fighting free radicals, using clean and pure serum boosts, body care, and the benefits of exfoliating the skin. Now we're going to be diving into the hair follicle and the scalp.  

There is no magic one-and-done formula, but there are quick and easy steps to take to get to those hair goals, no matter the texture or condition of your hair.

First... the Dirt

The only living part of our hair is the follicle, so let's take care of it. The base of the root at each strand (the "bulb") is the only portion that contains the cells that produce the hair. Healthy follicle, healthy hair. Healthy scalp, healthy follicle. See the connection? 👌 

When we strip our skin (or scalp) of what it needs with ingredients that are too harsh, it can either dry out and produce less protective oil, or to compensate it will produce more oil at the surface to try to get itself back in balance. This can lead to clogged follicles and slower than normal growth.

Here's a list of dirty ingredients that can slow the growth process, make hair brittle and dry, cause scalp sensitivity, and rob our healthy scalp of what it needs. 

• Synthetic Fragrances (any time you see 'fragrance' on a label, it's always synthetic and could literally contain dozens of artificial ingredients)
• Silicones
• Sulfates such as: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
• Mineral Oil
• Parabens such as: methyl-paraben, propyl-paraben, parahydroxybenzoate
• Denatured Alcohols such as: Alcohol Denat, SD Alcohol 3-A, SD Alcohol 30,  SD Alcohol 39-B, SD Alcohol 39-C, SD Alcohol 40-B, SD Alcohol 40-C.
• Formaldehyde
• Coal Tar such as: P-phenylenediamine, C.I. (followed by a five digit number), FD&C or D&C (followed by a color name and number)
• Phthalates such as DEHP (also-known-as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate)
• Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD)

We don't have to be a scientist to figure out that these things might not be great to include in our hair care routine. Additionally, with each rinse, all of these ingredients are going right down the drain into our water systems.

Now, to the Good!

Throwing a few healthy options into our regular hair routine can make all the difference. Incorporating our hair serum as a pre-shampoo or smoothing/finishing oil, and our pomade as a scalp mask or leave-in protection, are fast and easy.

Including these heat and UV protective ingredients, eliminating sulfate and SLS shampoo, and styling without excessive heat and alcohol really adds up to a healthier head of hair (which averages about 100,000+ hairs... no kidding!). 😮

Losing about 100 hairs a day can be normal, but more than that may be an underlying health condition, a reaction to synthetic ingredients, or even stress.

Just like with our skin, the better the ingredients, the better the results. I personally had much hair loss, eyebrow loss, and a receding hair line on and off for years. We finally found out it had to do with my auto immune and thyroid condition. If you're having symptoms like this, take notice as it may be worth checking with your health care provider.

So, what's the Bottom Line?

✨ Protect from the heat, ✨ decrease the heat, ✨ ditch the synthetics, ✨ and feed the scalp and hair strand with proven and authentic real ingredients.

There's no magic one-and-done pill, formula, or treatment. Avoiding the long lists of artificial ingredients, and sticking to what we recognize and love, can help make our hair youthful and happy. 

From the inside, eating well-rounded meals that include key nutrients helps both our skin and our hair. Giving our body energy from real ingredients will naturally help our hair grow as well. The celebrity hair Vitamins are C, D, E, Iron, Omega-3 and -6, and zinc.
