Celebrating the Rose ~ Beautiful Benefits for our Skin and Wellbeing

The Flower of Youth

Love is in the air ~ the red hearts, flower bouquets, cards and delicate candies are starting to flow, and it's all in celebration of finding love, getting love, or sharing love. Until February 15th, there is no escaping that Valentine's Day is right around the corner. Over 220 million roses are grown to share just on Valentine's Day alone! It's a good thing the rose is a sustainable flower.

There is another 'something' that loves roses... that loves to receive attention, and loves to be showered with roses ~ and that, my friend is our skin.

Even though roses seem delicate on the outside, they're skin-benefitting power-houses that benefit a wide array of skin conditions. With numerous benefits to help clear, strengthen, and age-defy our skin, it's a fitting time to share more about their benefits. Our celebrity ingredient this month is the rose. 🌹

What you May not Know about Roses

Hundreds of years ago, roses were used for healing wounds, to aid skin firmness, and as a luxurious beauty staple. Today they still play an important part in offering various, proven skin benefits; it's important to know that there are many different types of roses available.

The oil from roses that is readily available is not always beneficial to the skin. It may smell lovely, but it may be a synthetic version of the botanical which doesn't offer the same skin-enhancing benefits.

There was a time when roses were even used as a method of payment because they were so valuable. Imagine paying for your food with roses! Today, there are many synthetic versions of rose oil because it's considered to be a premium and very valuable oil. Because of this, premium rose oils and rose waters come with a price ~ and the benefits remain in each drop of those premium oils.

Roses share with us internal benefits as well as external benefits. Here are a few of the wonderful internal side effects of roses:

  • Helps to soothe and relax the central nervous system.
  • Promotes a better night's sleep.
  • Soothes coughs and sore throats.
  • Offers hormonal balancing properties.
  • Roses have been known to treat depression, tension, grief, and stress.

Externally, roses in our skincare treatments offer benefits as well:

  • Skin is hydrated.
  • Reduce the signs of aging.
  • Uneven tone and discoloration can be minimized.
  • Helps with sensitivities such as eczema and rosacea.
  • Skin upset and blemishes can clear.

What's the Big Deal with this Little Botanical?

Even though roses are delicate in nature, they're anything but delicate when it comes to how they benefit our skin.

The rose is a natural antioxidant power-house. Filled with essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, B, E, C and K, and antioxidants, they help our skin naturally fight the oxidative stress that happens from pollution and the sun. Those nasty free-radicals are what cause the skin to lower its protective nature, which then allows premature aging to occur.

Acne-prone skin, mature skin, eczema, dry skin ~ roses are a very versatile botanicals that can benefit these conditions.

Important minerals also occur in the rose ~ minerals like iron and potassium play a big part in keeping our skin rejuvenated and healthy.

You've heard of Retinol, Retin-A, Retinoids, or the other names that this ingredient is given? If you look at the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database, you'll see that Retinol and its counterparts are already banned in cosmetics in other countries, and it's considered to be very toxic 9 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being that absolute worst.

Luckily for us, we work with a very rich and delicate natural form of the same vitamins that Retinol is trying to mimic, albeit synthetically. A rosehip is the fruit that is left after the rose petals have wilted. Our rosehip comes from not only the fruit of the flower, but also the seeds.

The essential oil from roses is utilized through a pure steam distillation. Each drop of rose oil is filled with antimicrobial and anti-aging compounds that just can't be mimicked by a synthetic version.

Beautiful Power-Houses that Pack a Punch

We love having access to natural ways to help pamper and treat our skin on a daily basis. Rose petals, their fruit, and their condensation that they release when the petals are distilled all provide so many beautiful benefits to our brand. The aroma is uplifting, calming, and is also said to be grounding and even arousing. Maybe that's why the rose has become the symbol of love? 💗

Having sensitive skin, thyroid issues, Rosacea, and skin and health changes prompted the launching of our Qēt Botanicals treatments. Avoiding even those 'safe synthetics' and artificial emulsifiers can cause skin (like mine - take a peek!) to have an outbreak or an unfavorable change in texture. It's why we're so serious about each and every drop that we use in our formulations.

We rely on numerous plant and flower actives to help us manage and care for our skin. Each drop of rose essential oil has antioxidants that help to protect our skin from moisture loss, for both acne-prone and dry skin. It's like a botanical shield that can combat the toxins and free radicals in our day-to-day lives and keep them from entering the skin. Bam!

Our immune system relies on our skin's moisture barrier to keep toxins and pollution out of our body, and it helps our skin stay nourished and balanced with the proper level of nutrients.

A Little Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Avoiding skin-stripping, harsh cleansers and exfoliants is a simple way to keep our skin's microbiome and acid mantle healthy and undamaged.

Harsh cleansers and over-stripping exfoliants are two of the most common ways that skin is stripped. This causes the oil glands to overproduce to compensate for the 'exposed, harshly-cleansed skin.' No fun! We've had many new people come to us who think that their skin is oily when, in fact, it's actually dehydrated and isn't receiving the proper hydration and moisture balance. Our cleansing oils work thoroughly, but gently, to remove pollutants and impurities. Our exfoliants are gentle enough to use every day without harm. Providing the complexion with a proper balance of hydration and moisture only takes a couple mists of our botanical waters blended with a few drops of our day or night serum. Simple. Effective. Safe.

Roses can help balance this delicate hydration of the skin, which can help dry skin be properly nourished as well as help prevent oily skin from producing too much oil.

Speaking of a pound of cure... do you know how many pounds of roses it takes to produce 5 ml, or 0.17 ounces?  Over 100 pounds of roses, or over 220,000 rose petals. Isn't that amazing? That's why pure rose oil is so precious.

Dry Skin, Sensitive Skin, Active Skin, Dehydrated Skin ~ Roses are for Every Skin

A rose is just a rose by any other name, but for us, it's a botanical that we're proud to include in our facial treatments.

Rose offers antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which help to calm the surface of skin and ease any redness.

Both the rose oil and the waters of the petals are hydrating. They're gentle with no harmful side effects like synthetic versions of Vitamin A serums or Retinol. The high levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants keep the skin hydrated, and they also help to maintain the proper pH balance on the complexion.

So many beautiful benefits from this beautiful flower ~ inside and out.
