Let's Get to the Root of It ~ Is Hair Living, or Is It Dead?  

Our hair ~ below the scalp, it's a living follicle until it comes to the surface. So does this mean that hair is alive?

Kind of. Not really. Yes and no. (Huh?) 

This is what we mean. Hair isn't alive, but it's considered to be a living thing because it IS a part of a living thing. The bulb at the end of the hair shaft that rests in the scalp is the living part of the hair. Once the hair grows and sprouts from the bulb, it needs moisture, hydration, proteins, and the right care to keep it as soft and thick as it was when it first started to grow.

Scalp health is important. Our scalp is no different than our skin, it may actually be more sensitive because many harsh ingredients are found in shampoos and conditioners. Keeping our scalp happy, nourishing it with hair masks, less shampooing, and using protective and hydrating hair oils can help that living and non-living part of the hair in so many ways.

Summer Sun Hair Protection 101

Depending on the foods that we eat and the products that we use, hair grows at a rate of about one half of an inch a month, or six inches a year. Just like our skin, nourishing our bodies from within and nourishing with healthy ingredients on the outside can also help in every way. 

Summertime is the harshest season on the hair. Not only because of intense heat, but also because of vacationing, dipping in chlorinated or lakes or oceans, and accumulating sweat on the scalp. The heat from the sun causes oxidative damage to hair and can make it brittle, stiff, dry, and look not as young as it used to look.

Here are some quick tips to help protect hair in the summer:

  • Lock in the moisture ~ adding pomade or hair serum to hair while wet will lock in the moisture and hydration. 
  • Pre-condition before swimming or shampooing ~ dry hair has an open hair shaft. Fill it up with nutrients before shampooing or swimming to feed it before potentially getting stripped from the chlorinated, salt water, or tap water. 
  • Co-wash ~ washing with a conditioner once a week will give your hair a break from a traditional shampoo. Saturate hair, add your conditioner, especially on the ends, and rinse as usual. 
  • Ditch the heat dryers ~ it's a great time to experiment if you're a blow-dryer. With the virus and summertime relaxing, it's a great time to let hair air-dry and minimize the styling time. 
  • Feeling greasy? It might be because of excess sweat or makeup and sunscreen near your hairline. Sneak in a dry shampoo every-other-day or between shampooing to absorb excess oils or heaviness at the scalp. It doesn't add anything additional, it just takes away excess impurities. 
  • Outsmart the frizz ~ just a smidge of pomade applied to dry ends can help to control frizzy, sassy hair.
  • Hat, yes! ~ A hat will not only protect your hair from UV rays, but your skin as well. A 3" brim or more is recommended for the best protection mid day.

How to Use and Get the Most Out of your Hair Mask 

Our award winning Nutri-Pomade & Mask with Shea & Coconut is a multi-tasking hair product.

  1. It can be used as a leave-in conditioning treatment;
  2. as a weekly scalp and hair nutrition feeding mask;
  3. and it can be applied before any heat or styling tools are applied to protect and nourish the strands.

It performs well as a daily leave-in conditioner or pre-heat saver. When applying it as a mask, melt it between your fingertips and apply it liberally to the hair strands and massage it into the scalp. A flaky, itchy scalp will benefit. Used just once a week for 10-15 minutes as a mask is all it takes to persuade the hair into good condition.

That Little Extra Something from a Hair Serum, a.k.a. Hair Oil

We hear this often... 'I used to love my M_____ Hair Oil (that very popular hair oil brand that starts with an "M") and now my hair is getting brittle. What do you recommend for a hair oil?'

There is something to be said about silicones... they can make hair feel lovely, slippery and silky at the start. But they can also lock OUT moisture that needs to get into the hair shaft, and with time, the blend of the silicones (and usually a false fragrance and alcohols) can be very drying. Not a good recipe for healthy tresses.

Just as we love botanical oils in our  facial serums, we love and have added broccoli seed oil for its vitamins and its natural benefits that feel like silicone, without the plastics and nasties. Bonus: if you're applying any heat to the hair or using a heat appliance, using a small amount, a tiny amount!  on the areas where the heat will be added helps to protect it and close the strand, allowing the hair to look and feel smoother. Reducing the Shampooing ~ Is it for Everyone?

With different work schedules lately, and more folks working from home, many have gone that 'relaxing' route and haven't washed their hair as often.

It's good to give the hair and scalp a break, but we should remember that our scalp is skin, too. Products can buildup, impurities need to be removed, sweat can settle in, and we don't want to clog the hair follicles.

Washing hair a couple of times a week is what most experts agree on... but of course, it can depend on your personal hair and your routine. The finer the hair, the more often it needs to be washed. Thick, curly hair usually doesn't need it as much, but keep in mind that the scalp may need it more than the hair itself.

No Sweat! A note about sweating, exercising, and hair washing ~ if you're a gym goer, a sweater, or have been really feeling the heat, sweat can build up in the hair. Sweat naturally produces salt which clogs not only the hair, but the pores and scalp, too. Not washing enough can actually do more damage and can lead to damaged and breaking hair. Experiment and find your happy medium, and wash as you see fit, but remember to not let it go too long. 

How about the co-washing? Have you heard of co-washing? We mentioned this above as a replacement for a shampoo washing. It's washing the hair one time a week with your conditioner! Wet hair as usual, and rather than applying shampoo or rinsing away anything that was nourishing, apply your usual amount of conditioner to the hair, massage and rinse. You haven't used a shampoo, but you've rinsed and conditioned... and it may be just enough to give you a couple of more days without shampooing.

Wet Hair? Don't You Dare... 

Q. When is hair the weakest? A. When it's wet.  

Any combing, brushing, pulling, or styling on a regular basis to wet hair can cause extra stress on the strands.  

Adding heat to wet hair to dry and style it after washing can add even more damage.

Styling tip and my routine: I get asked about what I do to my hair. My hair is curly and wavy underneath, and it's straight on the top. Quite a mixed bag on my head! I've been cheating the system for some time. Rather than take my long shower in the morning, I wash the day away every night and do my big cleanup at night and go to bed with wet hair. When I wake up, I finger comb my hair with the pomade or hair serum, gently comb or brush through it, and then twist it into a low bun to do my workout, dog walking, breakfast, and early morning things. Then when I'm ready to clean up and go, I take out my bun and my hair has been somewhat trained. Sometimes I spritz a bit of the Natural Sea Spray for extra texture and separation.  

Once in a while I add a large curling iron to areas to mellow it out, and then apply a bit more pomade before adding heat to the ends of the hair as a leave-in conditioner. It's not heavy enough to feel too heavy when I sleep without washing my hair, but it IS heavy enough to protect my hair from any heat or UV rays.
